It’s also wise to safeguard your crawl space and foundation by closing vents to keep cold air out, inspecting insulation under the home, and making sure gutters and downspouts direct water away from the foundation. Finally, prepare for storms and power outages by testing your generator and stocking up on propane or fuel, trimming dead branches near your home, and checking smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms.

Inspect pilings, decking, and hardware by looking for rot, loose boards, or rusted hardware, then tighten, replace, or reinforce weak areas now. Remove lift motors and accessories: store lift motors in a dry location, grease gears, and inspect cables. If you have a floating dock, ensure flotation is secure and free of leaks, and adjust anchor lines to account for winter tides. Finally, protect pipes and utilities near the dock by winterizing water lines and outdoor showers, shutting off and draining electric fish cleaners and hoses.
